Not all performance problems are related to capabilities. Unfortunately, most
people’s solutions are.
When the root cause is Behavior, the issue lives at the individual level.
But here’s the critical distinction:
Behavior problems fall into two categories
- Capabilities — Can they do the job?
- Motivation — Will they do the job?
Many leaders default to training, but training only fixes capability.
I once worked with a GM who wanted to send a struggling manager to leadership training. I asked him one question:
“Could he do the job if his life depended on it?”
The GM replied, “Of course. He just prefers doing technical work.”
That’s not a capability gap. That’s motivation.
Sending him to training would have been a waste. Misdiagnose this — and you burn time, money, and credibility.
